It was a great pleasure to spend a week re gilding the incised inscription on the bandshell which the Central Park Conservancy asked me to do.
This mirror need to be cut down, to fit a clients needs. Once done, and the corners repaired, the backing and glass needed to be re-sized.
The frames and mirrors that come through the studio are too numerous to document individually. Here is a sampling of what we have seen. They include gilded mirror restoration, newly gilded pieces, tortoiseshell, ebonizing, and paint.
Reeded mirrors come in and out of the studio for restoration quite often. I was asked, by one client, to make a reproduction reeded mirror, so that it could be custom sized. You can also see the sample in my sample category. The moulding is a traditional 3 1/4" width, and has 6 reeds. It can be ordered in any custom size, and can be fitted with new, or antiqued glass.
I was asked to restore, and reproduce an antique Italian bed, for one of my clients, and one of his, as well.
This convex mirror was coated with gold paint, and the gesso ground was very unstable. We uncovered as much of the original gilding as possible, and after repairing the damage, gilding the rest to match.
This tole cachepot had rust spots, and missing paint. It also needed a serious cleaning.
This Madonna needed cleaning, and structural repairs. The splits and chips were filled, then in-painted, and gilded.
This rare pair of lion-dogs were restored at least four previous times. They were received covered with a new layer of gilding, that was itself, quite unstable. After poking around, we discovered, what would be the remains of the original ground, with fragments of the original paint, and took it down to that level. They had very few carving loses, which we replaced, and while doing so, discovered the date inscription on the inside of one of the loose pieces of wood.
We gilded these consoles, that were carved by William Sullivan.
This mirror had missing carving, as well as general flaking, and quite a few chips.
Another piece, covered in paint, with chips, very worn gilding, and corners were separating.
Lacquer and Chinoiserie surfaces for coffee, and other items, can be created using some of these samples. Reeded mirrors available in custom sizes. Additional samples upon request.
